Airport Transportation: The airport is serviced by bus and train service. Buses do not connect directly to the city, but bring passengers to either the nearest train or metro station. A complimentary bus departs from outside the airport terminal to bring passengers to the train station. The train ride to city center is about 25 minutes long. Bus 171 picks up passengers outside the terminal and drops off at Rudlow, the nearest metro station from where you can take a metro train to the city center.
Exploring Berlin: If you plan to do a lot of sightseeing, invest in the Berlin Welcome Card, good for 3 days of sights and transportation, costing about €18. Armed with the Card, visit the sights: Agyptisches Museum, an Egyptian museum that is home to the famous portrait bust of Nefertiti; Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, checkpoint of the old Berlin wall with historical exhibitions; Topographie des Terrors, based in a former Gestapo headquarters, has exhibits on the art of interrogation; Gedenkstatte Berliner Mauer, the memorial site where what remains of the Berlin wall stands; Kulturforum, home of the Berlin Philharmonic orchestra, it is also a collection of museums, galleries and libraries exhibiting some of Berlin's best works; Pergamon Museum, with its exhibits of ancient artifacts and Islamic art; Gemaldegalerie, an art museum featuring paintings from the 13th to 18th century; Berliner Dom, a beautiful church where the royal family Hohenzollerns are buried; Zoologischer Garten, Berlin's zoo with interesting animals and fauna as well as an aquarium; and Reichstag Building, parliament building with glass cupola. As you stroll around, look for: Brandenburger Tor, gate built in 1788 to celebrate the triumph of the Prussian army is one of Berlin's most revered landmarks; Tiergarten, a massive park complete with lakes and greens, is a wonderful place to sit on the lawn or benches and watch the world go by; and Fernsehturm, an ugly television tower redeemed only by its revolving topside restaurant and fabulous views of the city.
